Uluwatu takes its name from Pura Luhur Uluwatu, the sea temple on a cliff 70 metres above the water. The temple, the surf break and Single Fin are the Bukit's best-known stretch, with bars, cliff clubs and restaurants around the main corner. Alila Villas and Bvlgari are on the cliffs, and Nyang Nyang and Nunggalan beaches are further south.

The Uluwatu break, for intermediate to advanced surfers, is four waves on one reef: Outside Corner, Main Peak, Racetracks and Temples. You paddle out through a cave at the foot of the cliff, and in the dry season the line-up is crowded by 8am. Nyang Nyang is a long, steep walk down, with a wave for experienced surfers.

The temple is open from 7am to 7pm, and the Kecak dance starts at 6pm every evening. Jalan Raya Uluwatu is the one main road in, so leave extra time around sunset and the Kecak.
