Nyepi 2027: Bali's Day of Silence, and how to work around it
On Monday 8 March 2027 Bali stops for 24 hours, from 06:00 to 06:00. Nobody goes out, the airport closes, lights stay off, and mobile data has been switched off every year since 2024. Here's what happens, and how to plan your work around it.
What happens, day by day
- The days before
- Melasti: processions carry temple objects to the sea for purification, usually two to five days before Nyepi, on a date each village sets. Roads near the ceremony beaches, Batu Bolong in Canggu among them, close or go one-way while they pass.
- Sunday 7 March 2027
- Pengerupukan: from late afternoon, ogoh-ogoh (giant papier-mâché demons) are paraded through every village, and roads close across the island. It's the last chance to shop before the island closes, so do it earlier in the day.
- Monday 8 March 2027, 06:00
- Nyepi begins. For 24 hours: no going out, no work, no fire or lights, no entertainment. The airport and the sea ports close. Pecalang, the village security, walk the streets. Hospitals and emergency services keep working.
- Tuesday 9 March 2027, 06:00
- Ngembak Geni: the island wakes up, and families visit each other to ask forgiveness.

How to prepare
- Tell your team you're offline from 06:00 to 06:00 Bali time, in their time (the table on this page has it).
- Keep work off your phone's data: mobile data has been switched off across Bali every Nyepi since 2024. Home and villa Wi-Fi has stayed on each year, but that isn't promised.
- Download what you'll need, files, maps and films, in case the Wi-Fi drops too.
- Buy food and water for a day and a half. Nothing opens, and nobody delivers.
- Keep lights off or low after dark, with the curtains closed.
- Don't book a flight or ferry for the day, or for the day before: ports and the airport close, and the roads fill the evening before.
Nyepi and Lebaran together in 2027
Nyepi on Monday 8 March runs straight into Idul Fitri on 10 and 11 March. With three cuti bersama days and two weekends, that's ten days in a row off, 6 to 15 March. In 2026, when the two were also close, immigration offices closed for the whole week and the ferry queue at Gilimanuk reached 36 km as people left before the ports shut. Finish any visa business by Thursday 4 March, avoid travelling off the island in the first week of March, and expect staff from Java to be away for Lebaran.
Questions
When is Nyepi 2027?
Monday 8 March 2027, from 06:00 to 06:00 on Tuesday 9 March 2027, Bali time. The date is set in the government's decree of national holidays for 2027, signed on 15 September 2026.
Is the internet off on Nyepi?
Mobile data has been switched off across Bali every year since 2024, on the government's instruction, from 06:00 to 06:00. TV and radio stop too. Home, villa and hotel Wi-Fi stayed on each year. The instruction for each year comes two to four weeks before the day.
Can I work on Nyepi?
From home, over Wi-Fi, quietly and with the lights low: yes, as long as the Wi-Fi stays on. You can't go out, so no cafés or coworking spaces. Plan it as a day off if you can.
Is the airport open on Nyepi?
No. Ngurah Rai airport and the sea ports close for the 24 hours, so no flights or ferries in or out.
What happens if I go out on Nyepi?
Pecalang, the village security guards, patrol the streets and will send you back inside. Foreigners are expected to stay in their villa or hotel grounds like everyone else.
Why is Nyepi on a different date each year?
It's the Balinese New Year in the Saka calendar, which follows the moon, so its date moves from year to year. Recent dates: 11 March 2024, 29 March 2025, 19 March 2026, 8 March 2027.
