Coworking in Bali: every area compared

Bali has more coworking desks per remote worker than almost anywhere in Asia, and they're not evenly spread. Where you live decides whether coworking is a five-minute scooter ride or a forty-minute one, whether you'll use it daily or twice a month, and whether you need it at all. Canggu and Pererenan

The densest cluster on the island and the largest remote-worker community, with spaces ranging from quiet-library to café-with-desks. Most of them run events, which is the main reason to join one here. Villa Wi-Fi is the most reliable in Bali and the villas are the most expensive.

The trade-off is noise. Canggu traffic is real, and villas on the main roads hear it all day. Most people end up doing both: coworking two or three days a week for the company, villa the rest, because the commute is short but the traffic isn't. Ubud

The second cluster, with a different crowd: more writers, designers and founders on long stays, fewer day-trippers. Quiet, green and noticeably cooler at night.

The good spaces sit in and around the centre. Live there and coworking is a walk or a short ride; live in the rice fields fifteen minutes out, which is why most people choose Ubud, and there's nothing within walking distance and the Wi-Fi is the weakest on the island. People who take the rice-field villa for the view usually rent a desk and monitor after the first week at the dining table.

Seminyak and Kerobokan

Fewer dedicated spaces than Canggu and more café-working. The Wi-Fi is good, the villas are expensive, and the area is built for going out rather than heads-down work. A 27-inch monitor in the villa does more for your week here than a membership would.

Uluwatu and the Bukit

Spread out, and the surf is why people come. The coworking scene has grown into a real third cluster after Canggu and Ubud, but the spaces sit along the main road and most villas are a scooter ride from them. Wi-Fi varies villa to villa, so test before you sign.

Sanur

Calm, flat and closer to the airport than anywhere else on this list, about thirty minutes against forty to ninety for Canggu and up to two hours for Ubud. A handful of coworking options, solid Wi-Fi, reasonable villa prices and very little noise. The crowd skews older and more settled, and most of them work from home and cowork for a change of scene.

Amed and the east coast

Almost no coworking, and that's the point. This is where you work in silence and dive at lunch. Wi-Fi is fine for calls in most places, and it's worth asking for a speed test before you book. The Amed guide covers where to stay; delivery this far east carries a fee, so ask us for the rate.

When coworking is the right answer

Coworking earns its fee when you want people around, when the villa Wi-Fi has beaten you, or when you need a room with a door for a proper meeting. In Canggu and central Ubud it does all three well, and no amount of furniture at home replaces the person you meet at the coffee machine.

What it can't be is the other two-thirds of your week. You still work the mornings, the evenings and every rainy day at the villa, on a dining table at 75 cm with a chair someone chose for eating.
