North of Ubud, Tegallalang and Petulu have the Ceking rice terraces, an evening heron colony and resorts such as Capella, Viceroy and Equipoise.
Tegallalang is its own district, north of Ubud, and it's quieter up here. The Ceking rice terraces are in Dusun Ceking, where farmers still work the fields the traditional way beside the trekking paths and photo spots. Capella Ubud is in Keliki, Viceroy Bali in Petulu, and Equipoise, new in 2026, in Kenderan.
Petulu belongs to Ubud district. Its lanes along Jalan Tirta Tawar have long-stay guesthouses, about 30 minutes' walk from the centre, and villages further out, such as Keliki, are for people who work from home and want quiet. Much of the traffic through central Ubud is heading this way, to Tegallalang, Tampaksiring and Kintamani.
Every evening a colony of white herons flies into Petulu, about 4,319 birds when they were counted in 2017, so get there around 5pm. The nesting season starts in late October and peaks in December.
