Penestanan, the yoga village just west of central Ubud

Up the Penestanan steps from town, an artists' village since the 1930s is now Ubud's yoga pocket, with rice fields and the Campuhan Ridge Walk close by.

Many of Ubud's expats and remote workers live here, among them yoga teachers and healers. The pace is slower than in town and most cafés are plant-based, though it's busier than it was, and traffic slows on the steep, narrow lanes at peak times.

Penestanan is in Desa Sayan, with large rice fields, quiet back streets and, from some spots, a view of Mount Agung. The Campuhan Ridge Walk starts by the Gunung Lebah temple, 15 minutes' walk from the palace, and runs 2 km along the ridge. It's free and open all day; go at sunrise or after 4pm.
