Batu Bolong, central Canggu's café strip and beginner surf beach
The café strip in the middle of Canggu runs down to Batu Bolong Beach, where the waves are soft enough to learn on.
Batu Bolong is the strip of Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong down to the beach, and its restaurants, shops, bars and spas get closer together the nearer you are to the sand. Jalan Nelayan, towards Berawa, is a quieter version of it, and Jalan Padang Linjong runs from here to the Echo Beach end.
Batu Bolong and Old Man's, next to it, are Canggu's beginner waves. They're long, soft rights and lefts that work best from mid to high tide, and the water is busy with surf schools and longboards. The Lawn looks onto the break, and Times Beach Warung is on the sand.
Most people who stay for months live inland or further west and come here to surf and eat. The strip is the most congested road in Canggu, and the shortcut to Berawa is gridlocked. A 5 km trip that used to take 10 to 15 minutes can now take more than an hour. Many streets have no pavement, and distances are longer than they look.
